Several studies have shown that proteins, including whey and casein, are more satisfying than carbohydrates. Now, results from a study published in the July issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggest that drinking a glass of skim milk with breakfast may help you stay full longer. Thirty-four overweight adults attended two sessions, one week apart, in which they consumed a fixed-calorie breakfast and either a glass of skim milk or a glass of fruit juice. Study participants provided satiety or "fullness" ratings throughout the morning. Four hours after breakfast, they ate whatever they wanted for lunch, and calorie intake was measured.

Researchers found that participants consumed about eight percent fewer calories at lunch after drinking skim milk than those who drank the fruit juice. In addition, self-reports of fullness were higher throughout the morning after drinking the skim milk than after drinking the fruit juice, with the differences becoming larger over the four hours. These findings suggest that drinking skim milk with breakfast may help you stave off hunger pangs longer and therefore have more success while dieting.
